WFP in Balochistan's Flood affected Areas

In Pakistan, some 2.5 million people have lost their livelihoods as a result of the floods. The Government has not asked WFP for emergency assistance, but welcomed WFP deliveries of food in some of the worst-hit areas in the first few days of the flooding last month.
WFP is on standby with an emergency operation targeting up to 132,000 people for three months if officially requested.
WFP has already distributed 575 tons of food to 5,330 families (37,310 persons) in Noshki, Kharan, Jaffarabad and Jal Magsi districts. The food basket included wheat flour, pulses, vegetable oil, salt and high-energy biscuits.
On 25 July, WFP also launched a special operation valued at US$980,000 to provide logistics support to the UN-humanitarian community for three months. WFP NEWS

Ziarat

Ziarat is a town in Ziarat District, Pakistan. It is a famous holiday resort of Balochistan and nearly every trip from Karachi to Quetta stops at Ziarat. Ziarat ("a Mahommedan shrine"), was the summer residence of the chief commissioner of Baluchistan, and sanatorium for the European troops at Quetta: 8850 ft. above the sea and 33 m. by cart-road from the railway. There is a good watersupply, and the hills around are well-wooded and picturesque. ziarat is also very famous for its juniper trees. The juniper forest in ziarat is the world's second largest forest for junipers. The junipers are considered to be the real treasure of ziarat. There are trees in valley which are more than 7000 years old. In ziarat a herb called ephidra senica is also found in abundance which is useful in extracting a chemical called ephedrine, an important constituent of various medicines especially the cough syrups. Ziarat is a snowfall region, while snowfalling the beauty of the juniper valley(ziarat) is on its verge. In winter season there is no business but with summer the charm comes back. The local dish of ziarat is "saji" athough it is a cultural thing but it has a great taste for everyone. The common languages spoken in the valley are balochi and pashto. More tourists visit the place in summer.

بلوچستان: بحالی کے کاموں کا آغاز

بلوچستان میں سیلاب سے متاثرہ اضلاع کے انتظامی سربراہان اور نمائندوں کا ایک اجلاس کوئٹہ میں منعقد ہوا جس میں تمام ڈی سی اوز نے اپنے اپنے اضلاع میں نقصانات کی رپورٹ پیش کی۔ اجلاس کے بعد بی بی سی سے بات کرتے ہوئے صوبائی سکریٹری داخلہ طارق ایوب نے کہا کہ صوبے میں سیلاب سے متاثرہ آدھے سے زیادہ اضلاع کو پندرہ کروڑ روپے جاری کر دیےگئے ہیں۔ یہ رقم ڈی سی اوز اور عوامی نمائندوں کی کیمٹیاں ان مالکان میں تقسیم کریں گی جن کے گھر مکمل طور پر تباہ ہو چکے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ بائیس کروڑ روپے کی اشیائے خورد و نوش اوردیگرضروری چیزیں تقسیم کی گئی ہیں جن میں خیمے اور ادویات بھی شامل ہیں۔

اگرچہ مرکزی حکومت کی جانب سے سیلاب سے متاثرہ افراد کی بحالی کے لیے تھوڑی بہت امداد ہو رہی ہے لیکن پنجاب، سندھ اورسرحد کی حکومتوں نے اس طرح بلوچستان کے سیلاب زدہ افراد کی امداد نہیں کی ہے جیسی انہوں نے ماضی میں قدرتی آفات کے دوران کی تھی۔ اسی طرح غیرملکی اداروں کی جانب سے بھی ابھی تک صوبے میں بحالی کے کام اس تیزی سے شروع نہیں ہوئے ہیں جس کی ضرورت محسوس کی جا رہی ہے۔ بعض غیرملکی فلاحی اداروں کا موقف ہے کہ انہیں صوبائی حکومت کی جانب سے آزادی کے ساتھ کام کرنے کی اجازت نہیں دی جا رہی ہے۔ اس سلسلے میں صوبائی سکریٹری داخلہ کاموقف ہے کہ تمام غیرملکی اداروں کوصوبائی حکومت سے این او سی لینا چاہیئے تا کہ وہ جہاں کام کرنا چاہتے ہیں وہاں ان کی حفاظت کوممکن بنایا جاسکے ۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ جو ادارے امداد دینا چاہتے ہیں انہیں بھی پہلے صوبائی حکومت کومطلع کرنا چاہیے تا کہ انہیں بتایا جا سکے کہ کہاں کہاں کس چیزکی ضرورت ہے۔ حالیہ طوفان اور سیلاب میں بلوچستان میں پچاس ہزار سے زیادہ مکانات تباہ ہوئے ہیں، 176 افراد ہلاک اور195 لاپتہ ہیں جبکہ 5 لاکھ جانور ہلاک ہوئے ہیں۔ حکومتی اعداد و شمار کے برعکس آزاد ذرائع جانی اور مالی نقصان کا تخمینہ اس سے کئی گناہ زیادہ ہے۔ صوبائی حکومت کےمطابق فصلوں اور سرکاری املاک کی تباہی کا اندازہ لگایا جارہا ہے تاہم یہ نقصان اربوں روپے کا ہے اس بارے میں جلد ہی وفاقی حکومت کورپورٹ پیش کی جائےگی۔ بلوچستان میں جھل مگسی، گنداوہ، خصدار، نصیرآباد اور واشوک ماشکیل میں ابھی تک ایسے کئی علاقے ہیں جہاں چھبیس جون کے بعد سے اب تک ہزاروں لوگ سیلابی پانی میں پھنسے ہوئے ہیں۔ ریلیف کمشنر خدا بخش بلوچ کے مطابق ان علاقوں میں لوگوں کوخوراک پہنچانے کے لیے ہیلی کاپٹراستعمال کیۓ جا رہے ہیں۔ واضح رہے کہ ابھی تک تمام لوگوں کوخیمے ملے نہیں ہیں۔ صوبائی سکریٹری داخلہ طارق ایوب کے مطابق چھ ہزار خیمے روزانہ پنجاب سے منگوائے جا رہے ہیں تاہم ابھی تک پچاس ہزار مذید خیموں کی ضرورت ہے۔ سیلاب سے متاثرہ افراد کے لیے حکومتی اقدامات پر حزب اختلاف کی جماعتوں نے شدید تنقد کی ہے۔ ان جماعتوں کا موقف ہے کہ صوبے میں اس طرح کے اقدامات نہیں ہو رہے ہیں جسکی فوری ضرورت ہے۔ بقول انکے کہ حکومت کی نااہلی اورغفلت کی وجہ بڑے پیمانے پرجانی اورمالی نقصان ہوا ہے۔

There is a lakeside restaurant with picnic tables shaded by pine trees. At one end, the irrigation dam rises out of the depths like battlements of a fort. It is very attractive for holidaymakers, and is crowded with hikers and campers in holidays. You can hire a boat and paddle on the lake and round the island in the middle.

بلوچستان سیلاب: 156 افراد ہلاک

مقامی لوگوں نے بتایا ہے کہ اب تک باسٹھ افراد کی لاشیں نکالی جا چکی ہیں جبکہ سو کے لگ بھگ لوگ لاپتہ ہیں۔ نال سے دل مراد نامی شخص نے بتایا ہے کہ ان کے خاندان کے نو افراد سیلاب میں بہہ گئے ہیں جن میں سے اب تک صرف تین لاشیں نکالی گئی ہیں۔
انہوں نے بتایا کہ سیلاب سے بچ کر آنے والے لوگوں نے بتایا ہے کہ موقع پر تیس افراد نے ایک جگہ پر ہاتھوں کی زنجیر بنا لی تھی اور کہا تھا کہ اگر مریں گے تو اکٹھے اور جییں گے تو ایک ساتھ۔ جب سیلابی ریلے آئے تو دو افراد سلیم اور حکیم کے ہاتھ چھوٹ گئے تھے جو بچ گئے باقی کل ملا کر باون افراد تھے جن میں سے سینتالیس کے بارے میں کچھ معلوم نہیں ہے کہ وہ کہاں ہیں۔
گل مراد نے بتایا کہ سیلابی ریلوں کے بارے میں اتنظامیہ نے انہیں کوئی اطلاع نہیں دی تھی تاکہ وہ محفوظ مقام پر منتقل ہوجاتے۔
ادھر آواران کے علاقے جاؤ سےرمضان نامی شخص نے بتایا ہے کہ پیر کو مزید چار لاشیں ملی ہیں اور اب تک کُل چونسٹھ لاشیں مل چکی ہیں۔ رمضان نے بتایا کہ جس مقام سے لاشیں ملی ہیں وہاں سے اب تک بو اٹھ رہی ہے اور ایسا لگتا ہے کہ اس علاقے میں مذید لاشیں موجود ہیں۔

(ندی) آواران کے علاقے جاؤ سے گزر کر ہنگول ندی میں جاتی ہے۔ جاؤ سے لوگوں نے بتایا ہے کہ جتنی لاشیں ملی ہیں ان تمام کا تعلق ان کے علاقے سے نہیں ہے۔
پسنی، تربت، قلات، جھل مگسی، گندھاوا، نصیرآباد، بولان، مچھ، ہرنائی، قلعہ سیف اللہ، ژوب اور دیگر علاقوں سے سو سے زیادہ ہلاکتوں کی اطلاعات موصول ہوئی ہیں لیکن حکومت کی جانب سے صرف ایک سو چھپن افراد کے ہلاک ہونے کی تصدیق کی جا رہی ہے۔

یواین سیلاب زدگان کی مدد کرے گی

رابطہ کر کے سیلاب زدگان کی مدد کرنے میں دلچسپی ظاہر کردی تھی تاہم دو دن قبل وزارت خارجہ کی طرف سے انہیں کہا گیا ہےکہ حکومت پاکستان کا اقوام متحدہ کی جانب سے سیلاب زدگان کو مدد فراہم کرنے پر کوئی اعتراض نہیں ہے۔
فواد حسین کامزید کہنا تھا کہ اقوام متحدہ اس وقت نقصانات کا اندازہ لگانے کے لیے ابتدائی رپورٹ بنانے پر کام کر رہا ہے اور چند دنوں کے دوران حکومت پاکستان کی رضامندی کے بعد عالمی امدادی اداروں سے مالی مدد فراہم کرنے کے لیے ایک ہنگامی اپیل کی جائےگی۔ ان کے بقول اقوام متحدہ نے سیلاب زدہ علاقوں میں امدادی سرگرمیاں شروع کرنے کے لیے اپنی تیاریاں شروع کر دی ہیں۔

اقوام متحدہ کا کہنا ہے کہ اس نے بلوچستان کے سیلاب سے متاثرہ علاقوں میں امدادی سرگرمیاں شروع کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے اور حکومت پاکستان کی رضامندی حاصل کرنے کے بعد آئندہ چند روز کے دوران عالمی امدادی اداروں سے مالی مدد فراہم کرنےکی ہنگامی اپیل کی جائے گی۔
پاکستان میں اقوام متحدہ کے نیشنل ہیومنیٹئرین افیئرز کے ایک اعلی اہلکار فواد حسین نے بی بی سی کو بتایا کہ پاکستان میں قدرتی آفات سے نمٹنے کے لیے قائم ادارے نیچرل ڈیزاسٹر منیجمنٹ اتھارٹی، اقوام متحدہ کے مختلف ذیلی اداروں اور دیگر غیر حکومتی اداروں کے درمیان سیلاب کی صورتحال کا جائزہ لینے کے لیے ابتدائی اجلاسوں کا سلسلہ شروع ہوگیا ہے۔
ان کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ اقوام متحدہ نے چھبیس جون کو حکومت پاکستان سے رابطہ کر کے سیلاب زدگان کی مدد کرنے میں دلچسپی ظاہر کردی تھی تاہم دو دن قبل وزارت خارجہ کی طرف سے انہیں کہا گیا ہےکہ حکومت پاکستان کا اقوام متحدہ کی جانب سے سیلاب زدگان کو مدد فراہم کرنے پر کوئی اعتراض نہیں ہے۔

فواد حسین کے مطابق’ آٹھ اکتوبر کے زلزلے کے بعد اقوام متحدہ کے اداروں کے ساتھ جو سٹاک موجود ہے اسے تیار رکھا گیا ہے جبکہ یونیسف اور عالمی ادارہ صحت نے پہلے ہی بلوچستان کے سیلاب سے متاثرہ علاقوں میں دیگر مقامی اداروں کی مدد سے صاف پانی اورطبی سامان فراہم کیا ہے‘۔
فواد حسین کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ سیلاب زدہ علاقوں سے متعلق حقائق جاننا اس وقت اقوام متحدہ کے لیے ایک بہت بڑا چیلنج بن گیا ہے کیونکہ’مواصلاتی نظام درہم بر ہم ہے اور صرف سیٹلائٹ فون کے ذریعے ہی رابطہ ممکن ہے‘۔
سیلاب زدہ علاقوں میں بے گھر لوگوں کو شیلٹر فراہم کرنے کے متعلق اقوام متحدہ کے اہلکار کا کہنا تھا کہ آٹھ اکتوبر کے زلزلے کے دوران لوگوں کو شیلٹر فراہم کرنے کے تجربے سے استفادہ کرتے ہوئے بلوچستان کے سیلاب زدگان کو خیمے اور چادروں سے بنی پناہ گاہیں فراہم نہیں کی جائیں گی کیونکہ خیمے زیادہ عرصے کے لیے بہترین شیلٹر ثابت نہیں ہوسکتے ہیں جبکہ بلوچستان میں شدیدگرمی کی وجہ سے جستی چادروں سے بنے شیلٹرکارآمد نہیں ہونگے۔ ان کے بقول دو تین قسم کے مٹیریل کو آپس میں ملا کر ہی لوگوں کو ایک عارضی شیلٹرفراہم کیا جائےگا تاکہ وہ بارش اور گرمی دونوں کا مقابلہ کر سکے۔
ان کے مطابق سیلاب کی وجہ سے تمام سڑکیں بہہ گئی ہیں اور گاڑیوں کے ذریعے متاثرہ علاقوں تک پہنچنا کافی مشکل ہے لہٰذا جب تک راستے بحال نہیں ہوتے تب تک امدادی کاموں کے لیے ہیلی کاپٹروں سے ہی کام لیا جائے گا۔
ایران کے سفیر نے حکومت پاکستان کو پیشکش کی کہ ان کا ملک بلوچستان کے پڑوس میں واقع ہونے کی وجہ سے پانچ مقامات تفتان، پنجگور، واشک، رودک اور گوادر پر حکومت پاکستان کے ساتھ مل کر متاثرہ لوگوں کی مدد کر سکتا ہے۔ ایران کے سفیر نے یہ بھی کہا ہے کہ وہ اپنی چاہ بہار پورٹ کو بھی امدادی سامان کے لیے استعمال کرنے کو تیار ہے اور وہاں سے بحری جہازوں کے ذریعے سے گوادر تک امدادی سامان پہنچایا جا سکتا ہے۔
دریں اثناء حکومت پاکستان کی جانب سے امداد کے لیے اپیل کے حوالے سے متضاد ردعمل سامنے آیا ہے۔ ایک جانب تو ایوانِ صدر میں ہونے والے اجلاس میں حکومت پاکستان نے واضع کیا ہے کہ ملک کے جنوبی صوبوں میں بارشوں اور سیلاب سے وسیع پیمانے پر تباہ کاریوں کے باوجود اس کا فی الحال بین الاقوامی برادری سے امداد کی اپیل کرنے کا کوئی ارادہ نہیں ہے۔ تو دوسری جانب اسی حوالے سے پاکستان کے قدرتی آفات سے نمٹنے کے لیے قائم ادارے نیچرل ڈیزائسٹر منیجمنٹ اتھارٹی کے سربراہ میجر جنرل فاروق احمد خان نے پیر کو وزیر اعظم سیکرٹریٹ میں کئی ممالک کے سفیروں، عالمی امدادی اداروں اور اقوام متحدہ کے نمائندوں کو ایک بریفنگ بھی دی ہے۔
اس اجلاس میں شریک ایک عالمی امدادی ادارے کے اہلکار نے نام نہ بتانے کی شرط پر بی بی سی کو بتایا کہ بریفنگ کے دوران میجر جنرل فاروق احمد خان نے سیلاب سے ہونے والے نقصانات پر تفصیل سے روشنی ڈالی اور انہوں نےاس بات پر زور دیا کہ آٹھ اکتوبر کے زلزلے کی طرح اس بار بھی عالمی برادری، امدادی ادارے اور اقوام متحدہ کو سیلاب کی موجودہ صورتحال سے نمٹنے کے لیے مشترکہ کوششیں کرنی چاہیئیں۔
میجر جنرل فاروق احمد خان کا مزید کہنا تھا کہ اس وقت بلوچستان کے آٹھ اضلاع میں سیلاب کی وجہ تقریباً ایک ملین لوگ بے گھر ہوگئے ہیں اور حکومت نے متاثرہ لوگوں میں بتیس ہزار کمبل تقسیم کئے ہیں جبکہ ایک لاکھ خیموں کا آرڈر دیا گیا ہے۔
جب تک راستے بحال نہیں ہوتے تب تک امدادی کاموں کے لیے ہیلی کاپٹروں سے ہی کام لیا جائے گا۔
بریفنگ کے دوران ان کا یہ بھی کہنا تھا کہ لوگوں کی مدد کے لیے فوج کے دو بریگیڈ متاثرہ علاقوں میں تعینات کیے گئے ہیں جن میں سے ایک بریگیڈ ضلع تربت میں متاثرہ لوگوں کی مدد کر رہا ہے۔
عالمی امدادی ادارے کے اہلکار کے مطابق بریفنگ کے دوران ایران کے سفیر نے حکومت پاکستان کو یہ پیشکش کی وہ بلوچستان کے پڑوس میں واقع ہونے کی وجہ سے پانچ مقامات تفتان، پنجگور، واشک، رودک اور گوادر پر حکومت پاکستان کے ساتھ مل کر متاثرہ لوگوں کی مدد کر سکتا ہے۔ ایران کے سفیر نے یہ بھی کہا ہے کہ وہ اپنا چاہ بہار پورٹ کو بھی امدادی سامان کے لیے استعمال کرنے کو تیار ہے اور وہاں سے بحری جہازوں کے ذریعے سے گوادر تک امدادی سامان پہنچایا جا سکتا ہے۔
اس سلسلے میں جب میجر جنرل فاروق احمد خان سے رابطہ کیا گیا تو انہوں بریفنگ کی تصدیق کی اور کہا کہ اس اجلاس میں تقریباً پچھہتر ممالک کے سفیروں اور نمائندوں نے شرکت کی جن میں سے بعض ممالک نےسیلاب زدگان کو مدد فراہم کرنے کی خواہش ظاہر کی۔ ان کے بقول حکومت پاکستان نے عالمی برادری سے باقاعدہ مدد کی درخواست نہیں کی ہے تاہم پاکستان بین الاقوامی برادری کی جانب سے مدد فراہم کرنے کی پیشکش کو قدر کی نگاہ سے دیکھتا ہے اور’جو بھی مدد کرنا چاہے حکومت پاکستان کو اس پر کوئی اعتراض نہیں ہوگا‘۔

Another 200 people, mainly in Balochistan, are missing, they add. The storm and floods have affected two million people in 15 districts of Balochistan province. Heavy monsoon rain and winds have also lashed five Indian states with at least 40 flood-related deaths in Maharashtra, officials say. In neighbouring Gujarat state, at least 14 people were killed in flooding. Heavy rains also hit parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka states. Storms have affected large parts of South Asia over the past week, with at least 140 people killed week elsewhere in India. And in flooded parts of Afghanistan, more than 80 people have died in recent days, while several dozen others were killed in Pakistan's tribal areas along the border.

Over 100 people have now died in floods after a cyclone and rain swept through Pakistan, relief officials have said. The storm and floods have affected two million people in 15 districts of Balochistan province, officials said. Poor communications and the remoteness of some affected areas means the true death toll since Cyclone Yemyin hit on Tuesday remains unknown. Many people have been without drinking water or electricity for days. More rains are forecast in the area. Storms and floods have also affected other parts of South Asia, with at least 140 people killed over the past week in India.And in flooded parts of Afghanistan, more than 80 people have died in recent days. Relief challenge: Flash floods in Balochistan have hampered attempts to bring aid to people hit by storms.
"Relief goods are pouring in, but it is a challenge to distribute it in the vast affected area where communication and transportation lines have broken down," Raziq Bugti, spokesman for the Balochistan government told the Associated Press news agency.
Another relief official said more tents were needed to provide shelter for people who have been left homeless by the floods. Relief commissioner Ali Gul Kurd said hundreds of villages had been inundated, with 90% of crops, cattle and houses destroyed in some areas. He also that the casualty figures could rise as dozens of people had been reported missing. Four people have died in overnight rains in Sindh province, and in one district alone, 30 villages have been inundated with flood waters. Last month, more than 200 people were killed in Pakistan's biggest city, Karachi, by floods and high winds.

Earthquake 1935

On 31st May 1935 at 3.40 am in the early morning the city of Quetta and the countryside for 100 miles to the south-west including the town of Khelat were devastated by a severe earthquake which lasted three minutes. There was another severe shock on 2nd June,Killed about 30000 to 60000 peopls. An official Government communique issued on that day from Simla stated: “1. The whole city of Quetta is destroyed and being sealed under military guard from 2nd June with medical advice. It is estimated that 20,000 corpses remain buried under the debris. There is no hope of rescuing any more persons alive. The corpses extracted and buried number several thousand. There are about 10,000 Indian survivors including 4,000 injured. 2. All houses in the civil area are razed to the ground except Government House, which is partially standing but in ruins. The church and club are both in ruins, also the Murree Brewery. 3. One quarter of the cantonment area is destroyed, the remaining three quarters slightly damaged, but inhabitable. Most of the damage was done in the RAF area where the barracks were destroyed, and only six out of the twenty-seven machines are serviceable. 4. The railway area is destroyed. 5. Hanna Road and the Staff College are undamaged. 6. Surrounding villages are destroyed with; it is feared, very heavy casualties. The number is not yet ascertainable. Military parties are being sent out to investigate and render help. 7. Quetta:(Urdu: کوئٹہ) is the capital of the province Balochistan in Pakistan. The spelling of 'Quetta' is an erroneous English derivation from kwatta meaning 'fort' in the Pushtu language. Quetta is also known as the "fruit garden" of Pakistan. It is located in the densely populated Quetta District, which lies in the northeast of the province, and is situated in a river valley near Afghanistan's border, with a road to Kandahar in the northwest.

History:

Quetta (the word derives from kwatta, fort in Pushtu) is a natural fort, surrounded as it is by imposing hills on all sides. The encircling hills have the resounding names of Chiltan, Takatoo, Mordar and Zarghun.
Quetta was first mentioned in the 11th century when it was captured by Mahmood of Ghazni on one of his invasions of the subcontinent. In 1543 the Moghul emperor Humayun rested here on his retreat to Persia, leaving his one-year-old son Akbar until he returned two years later. The Moghuls ruled Quetta until 1556, when the Persians took it, only to be retaken by Akbar in 1595.
In 1828 the first westerner to visit Quetta described it as a mud-walled fort surrounded by 300 mud houses. Although occupied briefly by the British during the First Afghan War in 1839, it was not until 1876 that Quetta came under permanent British control and Robert Sandeman was made political agent in Baluchistan. Since Partition the population of Quetta has increased dramatically. Because of its military base and trading activities, and the introduction of commercial fruit farming, Quetta District can now support about half a million people.
Quetta, before the devastating earthquake of 31 May 1935, was a bright and bustling city with multi-storey buildings. Those couple minutes of the earthquake seemed like hours to the people of Quetta. It was almost completely destroyed in this earthquake and was virtually razed to the ground in the small hours of the morning of that fateful day, when about 40,000 people perished. Today, houses are generally single storey and quake proof, built with bricks and reinforced concrete. The structure is generally of lighter material. Incidentally, the bricks of Quetta have a yellowish tinge unlike the red variety of Sindh and the Punjab.

Geography and climate:

Quetta city is comprised of a valley surrounded by three different mountain ranges. It is north west of Karachi and south west of Islamabad.
Quetta has minimum winter temperatures ranging well below freezing point and as low as -13˚C (8.6˚F), while maximum winter temperatures seldom crosses 20˚C (68˚F). Snowfall was a common feature in month of January till late eighties but after that snowfall has become rare in winters. While summer maximum and minimum temperature hover around 40˚C (104˚F) and 12˚C (53˚F) respectively. Unlike to the rest of the country, Quetta does not have a fertile rainy season during monsoon time. In general Quetta has a dry climate.

Demography:

According to the 1998 census Quetta was the ninth biggest city of Pakistan with a population of 565,137. The city is dominated by a Pashtun majority, a Balochi and Hazara minority with an eclectic smattering of smaller groups. The Pushto, Balochi, Persian (Hazaragi dialect), Brahui, Sindhi, Punjabi and Urdu languages are spoken in large parts of Quetta, giving the city a very multicultural feel.
Quetta was the outskirt of Kandahar till it was captured by the British in Second Afghan war. Most of the Baloch settled in Quetta after 1970 when a new province by the name of Balochistan was created after One Unit system was abolished in Pakistan. Quetta was made the capital city of Balochistan.

Culture:

The inhabitants are mainly Pashtuns. Quetta tribesmen are known for their friendliness and hospitality. Making visitors comfortable is an integral part of their local traditions. The main bazaar on Jinnah Road is full of Pashtun traders, many of them wearing turbans. Hazara traders sitting in their shops, Baloch hawkers with red embroidered caps, and full-skirted nomad women carrying bundles of imported cloth for sale.

Sports:

Football is popular in Quetta, which has produced more renowned players then any other part of Pakistan. Mali Bagh is the best-known football ground. Teams in Quetta include the Hazara, Baluch and Afghan football clubs. In boxing, Olympian sportsmen are Syed Ibrar Ali Shah, Asghar Ali Changezi and Haider Ali Changezi. The three boxers belong to the Hazara ethnic group.

Quetta has many higher education institutions. The prestigious military

Transport:
Although Quetta is on the western edge of Pakistan, is well connected with the country by a wide network of roads, railways and airways.

Air Transport:
Pakistan International Airlines, Shaheen Air International and Airblue all have regular flights between Quetta and other major cities of Pakistan including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar. Pakistan International Airlines has a direct flight between Dubai and Quetta. Other international passengers traveling to Quetta can reach Quetta via any of the other main hubs of Pakistan, i.e. Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad or Peshawar.

Road and Railways:
The extensive network of Pakistan Railways connects Quetta to Karachi in south, by a 863 km (536 miles) track, Lahore in northeast (1,170 km or 727 miles) and Peshawar further northeast (1587 km or 986 miles). A metalled road is also present along the railroad that connects Quetta to Karachi via Sibi, Jacobabad and Rohri. A track from the Irani city of Zahedan links to Quetta via Taftan, but the train service were temporarily disabled in 2006 due to unrest in Balochistan.
Even though the linear distance from Quetta to Lahore is merely 700 km, there is no direct railroad track on this route because of the Sulaiman Range that lies in the east of Quetta. So all northeast-bound trains for Punjab or NWFP must go 350+ km south upto Rohri, Sindh (near Sukkur) first, before continuing north to Punjab and/or NWFP.

Telecommunication:
PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Corporation Limited) provides the main network of landline telephone. Many Internet Service Providers and almost all major mobile phone companies operating in Pakistan provide service in Quetta.

Tourist Attractions:
Quetta is a major tourist attraction for tourists from abroad. It is advertised as a thrilling location, full of adventure and enjoyment. Some prominent bazaars of Quetta are located on the roads Shahrah-e-Iqbal (the Kandahari Bazaar) and Shahrah-e-Liaquat (the Liaquat and Suraj Gang Bazaar Modern Electronics), Alamdar road (little Tokyo), Toghi Road (Safest Place for Punjabis) and Hazara town. Here, tourists can find colourful handcrafted art, particularly the Balochi mirror work embroidery, Hazaragi Chapal, Norozi and Hazaragi Carpets which are admired all over the world. For those interested in local cuisine, there are many sumptuous dishes to feast upon. The "Sajji" (leg of lamb), Hazaragi Aash, Mantho is said to be very good by locals. The Pathan tribesmen of the valley also enjoy "Landhi" (whole lamb), which is dried in shade and kept for the winters. "Kebab" shops are very popular, the best being Lal Kabab, Tabaq, Cafe Farah and Cafe Baldia. They serve Pakistani and Continental food, while Cafe China specializes in Chinese cuisine. Some of the finest mutton in the country is raised around Quetta. It has a delicious smell which can be sampled in the "Pulao" that most of the eating houses offer. Small and clean hotels in Alamdar road provide real comfort for tourists in peaceful environments.

Pishin Valley:
About 50 km, from Quetta is the valley of Pishin, which is surrounded by thousands of acres of vineyards and orchards, made by boring holes into rocks to bring to the surface the deep water. The rich harvest of apples, grapes, plums, peaches and apricots is loaded at Yaru railway station, seven miles from Pishin.

Hanna Lake:
Hanna Lake nestles in the hills ten kilometres (six miles) east of Quetta, a startling turquoise pool within bare brown surroundings. There is a lakeside restaurant with picnic tables shaded by pine trees. At one end, the irrigation dam rises out of the depths like battlements of a fort. It is very attractive for holidaymakers, and is crowded with hikers and campers in holidays. You can hire a boat and paddle on the lake and round the island in the middle.
